WatchUWearing?

An LA Times article, dated April 2006, reported that the number of watch sales dropped 12% in 2005 from 2004. The consensus of the time was, “Why go through the morning routine of donning a watch when I can just look at my cell phone?” Fast forward to today when more than 90% of America’s adult population owns a cell phone* and some may think that now, more than ever, wristwatches are such a fashion passe. If you agree, think again.

Last year in August, the same LA Times announced that “Watches are Back in Vogue.”  NPR echoed the sentiment with a segment, also in August of 2012, noting the return of the wristwatch. The reason for this watch resurgence? One word - FASHION. (Of course, there will always be the aficionado who loves the heritage of finely crafted timepieces - but those few do not drive the statistics of buying trends.)

Using a wristwatch as a fashion statement is making a comeback; for one, it’s a smart option as a starting point for refreshing a wardrobe. Why drop big bucks on entire outfits when you can get more mileage by jazzing up your accessory collection with a great watch?

Hollywood is playing its part in bringing watches back into the foreground. Movies, television series, the red carpet and other celebrity sightings are reflecting this new-again vogue. There is even a website dedicated to cataloging who wears what watch and where. You can search by brand, celebrity, movie and other related categories. The site,
Watch-ID.com is a fun and inspiring tool to help you write a wish list for your next timepiece.
